Mologic

Project Headstart – a new diagnostic for acute exacerbation of COPD
Description

COPD is the second most common cause of emergency admissions in the UK, responsible for one in eight acute adult medical admissions. Mologic is developing a urine based test for an early indication of exacerbation, simple enough for patients to monitor their disease status at home. Its design is similar to home pregnancy tests and uses an automatic reader to interpret the results and suggest further management. Providing early recognition of exacerbation, and patient notification to contact their clinician along with clinical information to guide treatment choice, will enable care in the community reducing A&E visits and admissions.

Microbiosensor

Project Reduce admissions through rapid diagnosis of urinary infections in the elderly
Description

Particularly In the elderly, urinary tract infection is a common problem, it s often associated with catheter use. It can become very severe, with rapid onset of confusion and can be very disturbing for both patient and carers. This results in many ambulance-delivered A&E admissions. We aim to develop a low-cost device which can be used in the home/care-home setting to indicate the presence of an infection in the urine and show which antibiotics can be used to treat it. It will be faster than the current microbiology lab testing and will allow initiation of antibiotic treatment without hospital admission.

Renephra

Project Reducing heart failure admissions using community based transdermal fluid removal
Description

5% of emergency medical admissions to hospital in the UK are caused by heart failure and 90% of those are related to fluid overload. Treatment resistant fluid overload in heart failure requires hospital administration of intravenous diuretics. This is costly and related to risks such as kidney injury. Renephra transdermal technology offers gentle treatment that can be applied at home using existing community nurses services, reducing risk of complications, improving quality of life and reducing hospital admissions.
